Apply to become an Education Volunteer
We are currently recruiting Education Volunteers to support our learning programme at the Old Operating Theatre Museum. Our Education Volunteers help us welcome and engage school, university and other visiting groups, supporting the Education team during sessions and helping visitors get the most from their experience at the museum.
What does an Education Volunteer do?
Education Volunteers support the Education team during group visits. Depending on the session, this can include:
- Welcoming and guiding groups around the museum
- Supporting visitors during education sessions and activities
- Helping with practical activities such as pomander making and pill making
- Engaging visitors with objects from the museum collection
- Supporting drawing and other interactive activities
- Sharing information about the museum and its collection
- Helping prepare and reset activities between groups
Volunteers are encouraged to develop their own knowledge of the collection through opportunities such as Object Chats, where they can research an object and prepare a short talk to share with visitors.

Who visits the museum?
Our education programme welcomes a wide range of groups, including primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, home-learning groups, international visitors and specialist groups.
Sessions may support topics including the national curriculum, history, medicine, nursing, health and social care, social history and the history of medicine.
When would I volunteer?
Education sessions currently take place at 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during term time. Each booking lasts approximately 90 minutes.
Volunteers can sign up to support individual sessions or a full day, depending on their availability.
What happens after I apply?
We will review your enquiry and, where appropriate, invite you to visit the museum for an informal interview and to observe an education session.
Successful applicants will then complete the relevant checks and induction before beginning to volunteer with the Education team.
DBS check
This role involves working with children and therefore requires an enhanced DBS check.
